Dog or cat hair everywhere? What actually helps at home

Самопочистваща се ролка за косми на домашни любимци

Black trousers, a light-coloured cat and five minutes before you leave the house. If you have a pet, you know the scene. The hair is on the sofa, on your clothes, in the car and on your guests.

No single fix gets rid of all of it. But a few habits together cut down the hair at home enough that you stop thinking about it.

Why the vacuum isn't enough

Short, fine hair works its way into the weave of sofas and clothing. The airflow passes right over it without pulling it out. That's why, on fabric, something that physically catches the hair and drags it out does a better job.

1. Brush regularly — in one spot

Every hair you remove with a brush is one that won't end up on the sofa. Brush your pet somewhere easy to clean — the balcony, the bathroom or outdoors. During shedding season, do it more often.

2. Grooming at home without the mess

Trimming at home saves a trip to the groomer, but it often costs you the time back: clipped hair floats through the air and keeps turning up for weeks. Some tools collect the hair as it's cut — like the X1 grooming vacuum.

A tip from the device's own instructions that applies to any clipper: for the first few sessions, just switch it on near your dog without touching them with it. Your pet needs to get used to the sound before you start.

3. Clothes and sofa — a roller with no refills

Sticky lint rollers run out just when you need them and leave a pile of used sheets in the bin. The self-cleaning roller collects the hair in a chamber that you empty, and then it's ready for next time. It works best on fabric — sofas, coats, car seats. On smooth surfaces and silk it does very little.

Keep the roller by the front door. Two passes over your coat before you head out take ten seconds.

4. A cover for their favourite spot

If your pet sleeps on the sofa, put down a blanket or cover just for them. Wash it every week. A blanket is far easier to wash than a whole sofa.

5. For quick clean-ups — a handheld vacuum

For floors, corners and stairs, a regular vacuum does the job. For the quick moments — five minutes before guests arrive — a cordless handheld vacuum that's ready straight away comes in handy.

In short

  • Brush regularly, always in the same place.
  • When trimming, catch the hair as you go, not afterwards.
  • A roller for fabric; a vacuum for floors.
  • Give your pet a blanket of its own and wash it weekly.

The hair won't disappear completely — that's the price of having a friend on the sofa. But it can stop being a problem.
